Firer and Senior Firer BPA Training for Professional Firework Displays
Solihull Fireworks are proud to have become a training school for BPA members, non-members and the general public to sit the City and Guilds / British Pyrotechnic Association Firer’s and Senior Firer’s course.
Courses are expected to last two days for each module and the dates and venue will be announced shortly.
The training is aimed at professional firework companies and technicians and intended to improve safety amongst the industry. Although training can be extended to the general public, the qualification does not mean that firework companies can supply category 4 materials to qualified people.
The British Pyrotechnics Association training: A quick guide
It is now over ten years since the British Pyrotechnics Association introduced the Firer’s training courses for display companies and other members to set up a high standard of knowledge and safety throughout the professional firework displays industry. Candidates are required to follow the syllabus over two days of training with an exam to sit on completion of the course. Once the candidate is successful a BPA Firer’s identification card is issued. They are then registered on the website and can be checked for verification of the authenticity of the BPA Firer’s ID.
With the BPA’s aim to improve health and safety for operators and the general public with regards to professional firework displays, the Firer’s training scheme currently has over 1700 registered operators. On-going development alongside changes in practices and legislation is based on hazards associated with:
Basic firework chemistry, firework types & effects, transportation, site design, rigging technics, firing methods, fallout calculations and safe disposal.
On completion all candidates are requested to keep a log book of all displays worked on to verify the necessary practical experience required to coincide with the formal training. The course currently offers training at two levels:
Firer’s – assistant operators with limited experience of display sites.
Senior Firer’s – senior operators level qualified having extended their display experience.
The BPA courses are now recognised as the City and Guilds accreditation giving candidates and event organisers assurance that the training meets the very highest quality standards.
